On several occasions now Conor McGregor has announced his retirement from MMA only to return again. McGregor’s most recent departure from the sport was in June, and now he is set to return to the octagon in January, after being drawn back once more.

McGregor, 32, has announced his retirement from the sport on two past occasions, in 2016 and 2019 respectively. His most recent one came after frustrations surrounding the difficulty organising UFC fights because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Nevertheless, the possibility of a fight with Dustin Poirier was something McGregor mentioned as being on the cards. Now his website lists the event as scheduled for January 23. It is likely the fight will take place in Abu Dhabi, with both fighters at 155lbs (70.3kg). The two men last fought in 2014, on which occasion McGregor won by a TKO.

So far this year McGregor has fought for only 40 seconds, taking a swift, decisive TKO against Donald Cerrone in a welterweight bout for UFC 246.

Despite spending large periods of time outside of MMA, McGregor has remained in the news in recent years for his brushes with the law. His most recent case was in November last year when he sucker-punched an old man in a Dublin bar for refusing a drink.
