Germany’s Francesco Friedrich wins 4-man World Cup bobsled race

Germany’s two-time Olympic bobsleigh champion, Francesco Friedrich earned his 3rd two-man bobsleigh gold medal in the World Cup bobsled races on Sunday held in Altenburg. This is the 21st time that Friedrich topped the World Cup despite sitting in the third position, right behind Cameron Stones and Justin Kripps, thus driving himself to a four-man victory.

Moreover, this is fifth win made by Friedrich for the current World Cup season which makes Germany garnering all the nine bobsled races of the World Cup in the first three tour stops of the season. Latvia’s Oskars Kibermanis stood at the second position while Germany’s Nico Walther stood at the third position.

Justin Olsen for the US drove ahead and reached the 19th position while Codie Bascue, who is already suffering from an injury on his left leg which hindered his better performance in the race, finished at the 20th position in the second heat. In a match played on 9th December 2018 in Sigulda, Friedrich won his career’s second World Cup two-man bobsled gold medal defeating Kibermanis.

Germany’s Friedrich and Grothkopp, the brakeman defeated Kibermanis and Matiss Miknis in both the rounds. The winning time of Friedrich was one minute and 40.25 seconds while the finishing time of Kibermanis was 1minute and 40.31 seconds. As per the reports in the series, Germany cornered all the three bobsled events held in Sigulda.

Where Mariama Jamanka and Annika Drazek won the first World Cup women’s bobsled race held on Friday, on the other side Friedrich and Alexander Schueller won the opening two-man bobsled race held on Saturday. After three races, Friedrich now moves into 675 points with Kibermanis on 620 points and Walther of Germany on 560 points. The present World Cup bobsled race season will continue in the coming weekend at Koenigssee in Germany.
